Main Church of Santo Antônio
Imagine a work of art with 482 kg of gold. Think of the time and resources to build something like this. We are talking about the Main Church of Santo Antônio, a 18th century construction and one of the main tourist attractions of the Brazilian historical town of Tiradentes. It's located on one of the most elevated places of the town like a reminder to indicate the powerful position of the religion, mainly during the colonial times.
In addition to the beauty of the construction, tourists can identify various interesting characters during the visit to the Main Church. Outside the church, the ancient solar clock presents a particularity known by few people. It has two faces to indicate the time according to the sun position: one during the summer and other in the winter. Drawn by a famous Brazilian artist called Antônio Francisco Lisboa (Aleijadinho), the front of the church attracts attention because of its beautiful towers.
The interior fascinates because of the richness of golden details mainly on the chapel and on the six themed altars, which present impressive sculptures. The organ is other attraction of the Main Church. It was built in Portugal from 1785 until 1788 and was lately restored. On Friday nights, the church presents a wonderful musical performance called “Organ Concerts”. Visitors can buy tickets (at the Main Church) to see the performances.
If possible visitors could know the Capela dos Sete Passos (Chapel of the Seven Steps), which is inside the Main Church but it's open only during the Masses. It's a small room where the seven Jesus' steps before his crucifixion are shown through wonderful sculptures.
The visit to the Main Church is full of surprise and works of art in a place that is one symbol of the historical town of Tiradentes.
