São José Fountain
The majesty of the São José Fountain impresses visitors in the Brazilian historical town of Tiradentes. The fountain was built in 1749 and stands out because its similarity to the front of a church. At that epoch, it supplied many people and animals with its water and was also used to wash clothes. Was all of this done at the same place? Yes. Because the fountain had three points of water supply. The first point (the main water supply) came from the spring water and was for human consumption. There were also two side sinks: one sink for animal supplying and other one where slaves washed clothes.

The fountain presents baroque elements and a wonderful sculpture of São José, the patron saint of Brazilian ancient explorers. The beautiful cross craved from stone and the Portugal's coat of arms are also attractions - Brazil was Portugal's colony until 1822.

One doubt remains: where is the water from? It comes from a spring in Bosque Mãe D'Água (woods), whose entrance is close to the fountain – at the same street. An old stone aqueduct filters the water that is led to the large fountain.

Tip: take advantage of the trip to visit the Bosque Mãe D'Água, a large and wooded place which presents an one quilometer pavement built by slaves. The admission is free but the entry into the place is controlled by a caretaker.
