Maria Fumaça (Locomotive)
Its noise can be heard from a distance and it's a “trademark” of the Brazilian historical town of Tiradentes. The locomotive ride fascinates children, young people and adults, who alternate between feelings of surprise and admiration. The trip from Tiradentes to São João del Rei (other historical town) lasts about 30 minutes and surprises the visitors that can see typical countryside scenes and the robust Rio das Mortes, one famous river in the region.
The rides were initiated in 1881 by Dom Pedro II, Brazil’s emperor. The visitors will realize its atypical whistle from many town points. One interesting activity is to see how the railway’s employees turn the locomotive. You can check this operation next to the railway station in Tiradentes. The locomotive that transports passengers was produced in the United States by Baldwin Locomotiv Works.
Tip: there is a very interesting museum in São João del Rei (a town near Tiradentes) called Railroad Museum, which is located at the railway station and presents equipment, illustrative panels and pictures that show the history of this fantastic attraction.
